João Gilberto-A Felicidade This came on the speakers in Tower Records and it blew my mind. The intense Carnaval-sounding refrain, with big percussion, shrill chorus, and exuberant trombone, and then it drops down to just João’s guitar and voice, tiny percussion and maybe a violin. The refrain is clearly samba abd the verse is clearly bossa nova but it’s the same groove! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fq9KR7QBy3I
Chega de Saudade-Jobim wrote a choro, in samba. He and João first recorded it with Elizete Cardoso https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZ13bQvvHEY, but it wasn’t until João Gilberto’s recording was done a few months later that João was referred to as a “Bossa nova“ guy, which became the name of a movement, and eventually was used to refer to both a style and a particular rhythm, originally referred to as “samba-bossa nova“.
